Distribution
A steel distributor that processes what it sells.
Metal Master buys master coil from a multi-mill domestic network, holds it, processes it to your dimensions, and releases it against your schedule — one purchase order from mill to dock.

Distributor, service center, or mill?
The three terms get used interchangeably and they should not be. A mill rolls master coil in mill widths, on mill lead times, at mill minimums. A pure distributor buys that coil and resells it as-is. A service center processes coil but may not carry the sourcing relationships behind it.
Metal Master does all three jobs: we source from five domestic mills, carry the inventory, and run the slitting and cut-to-length lines at Performance Master in Crawfordsville, Indiana — adjacent to Nucor Steel Crawfordsville. One purchase order covers sourcing, processing, certification, and delivery, and one company is accountable for gauge, width, camber, and date.
When distribution is the right buy
- Annual tonnage on a grade sits below the mill minimum
- You need widths or lengths the mill does not roll
- Your release schedule is shorter than mill lead time
- You would rather not carry inventory risk through a price cycle
- You run several substrates and want one supplier, one certification package, one invoice
Above those thresholds, mill-direct is often cheaper — and we will say so, then help structure the order.
How a release program works
- 1
Forecast
You share an annual or quarterly volume by grade, gauge, and width.
- 2
Position
We buy master coil against that forecast and hold it in stock or on consignment.
- 3
Release
You call releases against your build schedule; we process to size on that release.
- 4
Deliver
Material ships on our lanes with a CMTR and full traceability under ISO 9001:2015.
Product specifications live on the products index; processing tolerances on capabilities.
Frequently asked
- What is the difference between a steel distributor, a service center, and a mill?
- A mill rolls master coil in mill widths on mill lead times. A distributor buys and resells that coil. A service center processes it to size. Metal Master does all three, so one purchase order covers sourcing, processing, certification, and delivery.
- Do you buy from one mill or several?
- Several — Nucor, Cleveland-Cliffs, Steel Dynamics, US Steel, and ArcelorMittal, with qualified international programs when spec, timing, or price requires it.
- When does buying from a distributor beat mill-direct?
- When your tonnage is under the mill minimum, you need non-standard widths or lengths, your release schedule is shorter than mill lead time, or you would rather not carry the inventory risk.
- Can you hold inventory for us?
- Yes. Stocking and consignment programs hold your grades and gauges and release against your build schedule.
